Can anyone say "oops"... That's my guess. If we wanted to show "strength" we'd launch a missile from just outside of their waters, no ours. As has been stated, everyone knows we can launch a missile anywhere we want...

I said CLAIMED it was an airliner. Not sure I buy it yet.

How about the news get a clue, and interview people living on Catalina Island, who would have had a better sightline on it?

Clearly not an airliner or any other type of plane unless they launched another scramjet. Contrails form off the wing tips and leave 2 pretty distinct lines when viewed close to object making them. I have never seen the afterburners of any military jet put out that much smoke. The only thing I know of that puts out that kind of plume would be a very large booster rocket. If I had to guess, I would go with the ballistic missle probably fired from a submarine that the military knows about but just has decided not to comment on. Makes the most sense to me...

Well for those of you who've seen an airliner come over the horizon straight towards you, it DOES kind of look like a rocket taking off.

I would also like to know, if it was really a missile, why was it moving so slow? If you say that's only because it was so far away, well the further it is away, the more people would have seen it, and the mystery would have been solved.
