I contemplated the same thing when I bought my F-150.
Price of Ranger vs F-150 was within a couple grand. Mileage was within 1-2 mpg, and towing/hauling capacity is far greater with a half ton.
To me it was a no brainer to get the 1/2 ton. I may not have a regular use for the full capacity, but it was there if/when I needed it.

I grew up with a light duty, it's all I really need and I like a smaller sized vehicle.
