Really, given the choice I'd go for Barrington, Palatine, etc. If it was a requirement of keeping my job secure I'd live in an area I liked and suffer the commute. Mind you, the caviat of the job I know Neebs and Chris wouldn't take this decision lightly - and just the fact that this has been thrown out there means the research alone has started, but it might quickly become a reality without more of a thought to keep the job or lose the job I've suffered through much worse than living in Chicagoland. But, now - that area of choice might very well be as expensive [or more] than Oak Park. Joliet continues to change. I guess I'm still shocked that it's considered a suburb of Chicago I was born there - it was the STICKS then. And, if you lived there you either worked at the power plant or prison. Now, it's part of urban sprawl.

Zoomie, you KNOW given the choice, we'd just pack up and move to Austin. Seriously.
BUT, right now, my job is great, and future prospects here ("here" being with the company) are excellent, SO.... gotta keep an open mind. And in my book, white trash and redneck are pretty much one in the same, too (though I prefer 'necks to trash ANY DAY... ). Thanks for all the feedback everyone... so much to think about! |

And vice versa - you can be a redneck and not white trash.
Still, redneck seems to be more about hobbies and choices, where white trash is a way of life. |

Hi! Given work in Romeoville, your only prayer for commute sanity is up the 53 / 355 corridor. North of 88, the villages turn more civilized. Once you cross north of Palate Road, you're pretty safe in looking east to 45/Milwaukee Ave. Factor the cost of an I-PASS tag and tolls into your cost of living.
There are pockets of both bad and good in the area - short term rent somewhere "safe" and venture out looking for where you'd like to call home. |

Ok here are the pros and cons
Pro’s Tons of stuff to do.. Professional sports a plenty Six Flags Shedd Aquarium ( I love this place) Art Museum Science Museum The L (for getting around downtown) Navy Pier Shopping Great food, especially pizza 2 major airports, gives you lots of choices for traveling Lake Michigan Plenty of local breweries (Goose Island is pretty good) Schools for the most part are real good in the Midwest (for future wee ones) Con’s Housing Costs Property taxes are real high Traffic Inner city crime Cold winters Flat and not a ton of trees near the city Conservative (as is all of the upper Midwest) The biggest thing for you would be weather and the general conservative lifestyle of the Midwest. If you can deal with that then it might be a good move for you. |

sounds like they are ahead of the curve as far as research. that's a good thing. Yeah my stepdad's mom was born in Joliet as well. she now lives in middle wisconsin. she hasn't been back in over 40 years. we don't even tell her what it's like there now as opposed to what she says about it. LOL I've only been there a couple times and that was really just going through. |

White trash is more about how much of a piece of garbage you are to the human race.
