Default Shifter is sticking!!!!!!

I was riding yesterday and i noticed that my shifter was sticking in the down position when i was down-shifting. So i would shift from say 6th to 5th and it would stay pushed down then it would release and pop back up to the original position. Its really aggravating. The bike didnt seem to perform any different but i dont like that its doing that. Is it a sign saying need new clutch or something? Any help would be appreciated.

Check the shifter to see if the retaining bolt is still there. if its not is the shifter rubbing anywhere? Is the linkage rubbing or binding in any way?

After that my thought goes to possible a bent shifter fork and an expensive fix?

Yamaha uses a bushing instead of a bearing there. Make sure that the shift shaft isn't contacting the cover. If it is, you may need to replace that bushing. I suggest getting the kit from Factory Pro that includes a bearing to replace that bushing.

Also, try some grease where the shaft comes out, make sure that the shift lever isn't bent and touching anything. You may need a new spring-one comes in that kit btw or you can get it from the dealer. Part number 90508-32682-00 costs about $4

When is the last time you changed your oil? If you don't remember, change it. Put some synthetic in there as well.

Well since i havent changed the oil since ive had it and i asked my buddy when he changed it last and he doesnt remember i think its probably a good idea that i do that ASAP. I was going to do it yesterday but RT Cycle(Yamaha Dealer) here in town was closed and Southern Honda didnt have the oil filter for it so Im going down there today to buy the filter and change it tonight. What oil do yall suggest?

I think I use the Rotella synthetic that walmart sells. I use to use the Honda HP4S in the 600rr.

whoaaaaaaaaaaa change your oil.

I do it at least twice a season. amsoil full synth or repsol for me plz.

i doubt thats why your shifter is sticking though. probobly has more to do with your linkage arm or something. I suggest kicking your bike really hard.

A. Worn Bushing
B. Stretched or broken return spring.
C. Bent shift shaft (been dropped?)
D. SOme bikes have the shift shaft run exposed through the area next to the sprocket and if you don't clean it out once in a while you can get a buildup of sticky, gritty goo that can cause the same issue (Much like what is washing up on the Louisiana coastline)..clean the goo out and rinse with a little kerosene...

NOT a clutch issue.
