As far as riding on the street... I generally watch the vanishing point of the curve. The really conservative riders recommend that if you can't safely stop (within your lane) between the point where you are and the vanishing point of the corner.. you're going too fast (for street purposes).
If you want to work on your lines... take it to a track. Seriously. THEN take what you learn from the track, back the speed down a few notches (performance awards from the local police department are not really something you WANT to get), and have fun. But the BEST place to learn these things is at a track with qualified instructors.. controlled environment, EMS readily available, etc., ad nauseum. Just my 2 cents...

Same here until I see gravel, then I tend to stay in either the inner or outer cage track throughout the next few turns.

My thought process is outside, inside, outside...but it depends on the circumstances, conditions, etc. Most of mine is instinct, and at the track I look for the dots to ensure proper lines.
At the dragon, I ride hugging the white line staying as far from the yellow as I can without running into the ditch... |
