How many miles do you go before you change your fork oil?

Well I just rolled over 35k and my left fork was leaking (well...for a year now) and it turned into a gusher.
The oil in the left fork looked like crude oil and smelled like death. It was bad, so bad it gave me a headache. The right fork was changed I'm guessing cause it had a light light red/gold color. I have non-inverted forks and cartridges inside so its pretty easy for me. |

I changed mine at roughly 19000 miles. I busted both fork seals on these damn rough roads here. I was NOT HAPPY!

Did mine at 38K because I was upgrading the springs and the cartridge emulators...plus the seals were leaking a bit. Hubby thinks the oil had not been changed before that...

I had mine done about 5,000 miles, and they're due again @15,000 miles. The guy who did them, gave me a little glass vial of oil, after it settles it has 3/8" of metal powder in the bottom. That was after 5,000 miles. Now I don't know how he sampled the oil, but it has a lot of metal in it.

That metal is usually (and hopefully) all from the bushings.

The bushings should have a teflon coating. If there wasnt any on them then you got problems.
Even though the oil in my left fork was crude oil, the bushings looked brand new. |
