how to sell a classic car, thats still a project
my old old boss has asked me to help her son sell his project 72 chevelle, he's had it 5-6yrs and hasn;t really progressed, and now he's bought a fixer upper house.
he's spent a boat load of $, says $20k, but still has a long way to go. and really had no idea about how to work on cars so he paid others to do alot of work and now has alot of parts. top of the line stuff baer brakes hotchkis susp eibach springs 383 roller cam almost ready for paint he's wanting $10k, does that seem reasonable? other then craigslist, where else? and yes if i help sell it i get a commission, cash to add to my unemployment.[/

$8k is pretty reasnable IMO. anyting higher is totally unrealistic to me. especially for a car that isnt all original. for any non running project car though, to me, $4k is my upper limit, since I know exactly how much of a pain in the ass it is, how much time, and money it costs, and all that shit. its a LOT of work and headaches to deal with these project vehicles. not to mention money.

He won't get an $8K offer now.
Projects are usually sold at huge discounts. He would be better off to finish it himself and then sell it. He can take courses at community colleges that will teach him how to restore a car, so he can stop paying others to do the work. I would not pay more than $3-4K for a project like that. Hell, the glass alone would probably cost $2000+

He should have taken the $8k. He has two options: Finish it or give it away (<$5k).

paint job alone on that car is going to be another $10-$15k - this is a HUGE project and he's not very far along despite how much money he's spent. And as a coupe, it's not a valuable. He's in over his head and should take whatever he can get - $8k is a GREAT deal - if he can get $5k and get it out of his driveway he'll be doing well.
1972 is not a desirable car. He might like it a lot ($20k spent means he does...) but generally the earlier ones are far more desirable (and worth more) Option 2 is to sell off the parts he bought on Ebay - try and recoup more of the retail on those. How long has the motor sat open like that? And is there a power assist booster with the Baer brakes? Lots of questions to get a more accurate price...but generally he's NOT going to get $20k back out of it - not even close. But he'll get more out of it by parting it back out than trying to pawn off the package.
