I found out an ex of mine had some medicine for herpes, but she claimed it was for cold sores. We never had sex after that and broke up soon after. That was 8 years ago, so I think I'm in the clear.

Cold sores ARE Herpes.

There are two types, Simplex 1 ("cold sores"), and Simplex 2 (itchy dick).

So, it's quite possible she was telling the truth.
