I would think married, just because they are more likely to be miserable

I'd say engaged - it could still be in the guys' favor there before any legal documents are drawn.

When I was single and saw a ring I headed the other way. I'm not gay enough to know the difference between an engagement ring or wedding ring so I just assumed they were married.

But I have been hit on by more married women than engaged women.

If I was to go for one of the two I'd go for the married woman. Engaged women usually have some complex of awesomeness because they simply got proposed to and are "madly in love". Your 40 year old Yoga regular who is tired for her 280lb football watching, hotwing eating, and beer drinking couch potato husband is a much easier target.
