Worth it?

A friend of my wife is gonna get a dirt bike for her kid. He is 14 around 6' 150lbs and has got his mind dead set on this http://flint.craigslist.org/mcy/1967706149.html

She said that its a lot of money for her and it will be the kids first dirtbike but not the first time riding. He has been riding with his friends. It looks like a nice bike but I have a few problems, 1) seems like a lot to spend on a "first" bike 2) being that its small and his first he'll probably bore with it easy and want something bigger and stronger fairly quick as he is hitting the growth years. 3)buying it all tricked out takes the fun out of tinkering with a new-to-you toy.

So does it look like it would still be something good for this kid?

Naw, its size is great for a first dirt bike, but the price is crazy. $4500 for a 2k bike, never in a million years would I spend that much. Maybe it's worth original sticker price, if that, mods arnt worth shit (to me)

dude, that is what the guy has into it, bike and parts. He is selling for $2300.

I would offer $1500 for it, on the high end. I didnt even see the $2300.

125cc two stroke, stock. Let him build it from there, as he learns to ride.

That's way too much money for a way too tricked out pit bike.

He's 6'.

A YZ 125 or a nice used CR 125 would be perfect.

That is what I was thinking too. I mean half the fun of these little pit bikes is that you get to build it to suit you. I just thought that perhaps a bike a little larger would be better so that he isn't breakin the bank on his mom to upgrade in 3 months

I agree with this 100%. The seller has certainly bolted a bunch of crap on that TTR, but it doesn't change the fact that it is a glorified minibike with an air cooled engine, drum brakes front and back, and a third of the suspension travel when compared to an 8-10 year old 125cc motocrosser. That is bad enough, but add in that at least around here the 125s are going for about half that price too. An older 125 will be ridiculously more capable and he will still have money left over for all the gear he will need.

You said the price is a bit of a stretch for the mom. Do they realize they are looking at another $300-$500 for gear on top of the price of the bike?

X a million. 6' is waaaayyyyy to big for a minibike, which is what that TTR is. He'd hate it in about 15 minutes.

The boy needs a 125 mx'er.

Trail riding or MX duty? Trail riding I'd go a DRZ200 or similar-electric start/4 stroke FTW. Otherwise the 125/250 would be advisable.
