I have a buddy down here that had that exact situation on his 1000RR.
Rear wheel was chained to a pole. The thieves removed the rear axle, took the bike and left the wheel, still chained.

That may be but this is a set shot. The tire is flat. The cable is so short and tight, the bike would have to have been up against the sign, with it's rear tire on the curb, preposterous. Besides, that's pretty small cable and could be easily cut, much easier in fact, than it would be to dismantle and load a bike (a heavy cruiser at that, judging by the rim) sans a rear tire. If you have the tools, time and man power to do all that, surely you could get through a 3/8'' cable. I have a battery operated saws all that will cut that in 30 seconds, no problem. Shit, a hacksaw will do it in less than 5 minutes.

that loks to be staged to me. also why you always go through the frame, chain and swingarm to ensure they cant just take a rim off and take the bike.

I had the opposite thing happen to a bicycle when I was a kid... chained the frame to the rack, some shit stole both the wheels. Hell, thinking on how much motorcycle tires and brake rotors cost, maybe i should start looping a cable through them...
