I have no problem with this.

It would put a stop to people collecting 2 years of unemployment just because they can. The argument that doing community service keeps you from looking for a job is crap. So how do people find jobs when they are already employed? Right..

Truth! I collect unemployment until it got difficult and I got bored and went and got a job!

Heck, most of the time if you do the math, it doesn't pay to get a job when you are collecting... I actually lost money, true story.

Most work is seasonal here. Not sure what you could do for 'community service' in a Canadian winter that wouldnt be cruel and unusual.

Heck, I wonder what they'd do for community service period. I've had it a couple times and we never had crap to do... I couldn't imagine what they'd do with a sudden 100,000+ people cleaning the airport, working at the animal shelter or picking up trash on the highway. The prisoners could basically forget getting outside to work. Heck, half of the unemployed will be put to work immediately to handle the logistics and paperwork associated with trying to find community work projects and place the other half in them.

yay problem solved! The unemployment rate will drop 50% the day after this bill ispassed!

Make them clean up neighborhoods. Clean up their houses that they let rot. Work at homeless shelters, animal shelters, parks. Get them off their asses.

This is ridiculous. If theyre going to punish the people who just lost their jobs with community service are they going to punish the corporations that laid them off if they havent started hiring again in 12 weeks?

Hells yes, but there has to be a provision that if they have a bonified interview they get to skip it for that part of the day.
