Helmet: Suomy Ventura
Suit: 2 piece Teknic Lightning
Gloves: Icon Merc Long
Boots: Alpinestars SMX-3
Back protector: Dianese Shield Race

And I wear this stuff, ALL of it, each and every ride; regardless of the length of the ride. Squids need not apply.

Coming this year:

Bohn Adventure shorts
Bohn Chest protector

dReWpY 02-25-2008 04:03 PM

Helmet: suomy Gobert
Leathers: AGV 2 piece
boots: A* smx and gasp harley high tops
gloves: dainese and agv
Jacket txtile:jr atomic
Jacket meshie: JR
Pants rain/touring: JR
Back protector: knox

marko138 02-25-2008 04:04 PM

I also have a couple of JR textile jackets...a Phoenix mesh and an Atomic textile. But leather beats Rock Paper and Scissors so I dont wear them.

dReWpY 02-25-2008 04:10 PM

i have slid twice in my atomic, and it held up, not a scratch on me, i had leather pants on the second time so i was compltely unharmed, first wasnt so lucky, ripped the levi's and got a paper cut booboo on my knee

firm believe that txtiles can be a nice addition for a well rounded motorcycist gear selection

Thats good to hear. I like my atomic...but the leather fits better. I think I've got the same color as you....the grey. Mines the Atomic 1.0

dReWpY 02-25-2008 04:13 PM

ditto on color, but mines the 2.0
fits great, i love that jacket

I agree. I just got my first textile a few months ago, and I couldn't be happier with it. It's a good compromise when you want more protection than mesh, but it's too hot for (non-perf'd) leather.

Yup, we definatly like our gear. The great thing is the both of us are great at finding deals on stuff. There maybe only a handfull of things we both have that we paid full retail on. Most everything was on sale, clearance, or we just got a good discount at a store.

Once you're moving, it's fine. You don't really feal the sun beaming down on you when you're stopped either. Proly because of the thick leather. It's no way near as bad as standing in the bright sun in a black t-shirt. That shit'll still give you a sun burn even know you're wearing a t-shirt, you know?

Jacket - Leather: Teknic Lightning, wrecked in it twice, no issues.
Jacket - Textile: I have a Joe Rocket Ballistic Touring Jacket, no issues.
Jacket - Mesh: Cortech GX-Air AMAZING JACKET! I absolutely LOVE this jacket (more at bottom). I had a Firstgear mesh jacket, POS. I had a Joe Rocket Phoenix Jacket, also POS.
Pants - Leather: Don't have any.
Pants - Textile: Don't have any.
Pants - Mesh: Don't have any.
Pants - Denim/Kevlar: Icon Recon Jeans, wrecked in them once, they held up well. I like them.
Helmet: RF1000, I LOVE Shoei's. They wind tunnel test their helmets more than any other manufacturer, their shield change is very quick and easy, plus if you wreck you can send your helmet to them and they'll inspect the helmet to make sure it's safe to wear.
Gloves - Leather: Shock Racing GP1's. I like them.
Gloves - Mesh: I only wear leather gloves
Gloves - Weather/Winter: none, the GP1's work fine.
Boots: AGV Sport Sebring.
One-piece suit - Leather: Teknic Violator 1-piece, so far, so good, Used to wear an IXS suit, went down once, held up great. I really liked that suit, but you can't get them in the states anymore.
Two-piece suit - Leather: Don't wear two-piece.
One-piece suit - Touring/Textile: NA
Two-piece suit - Touring/Textile: NA
Armour (i.e. Icon, Bohn, Alpinestars): Alpinestars Tech Back Protector, I liked it, I now have an Alpinestars Bionic vest, which is a back protector/chest protector combination, I really like it so far.

The Jacket, it's a Cortech GX-Air, it is the best mesh jacket I have ever seen! It has real THICK leather on the shoulders, elbows, and down the back. It has the best foam back protector I have ever found built into a jacket, and it has triple layer armor at the shoulders and elbows. It has a mesh chassis, with leather in impact/abrasion areas. It came with two spare liners, a quilted one and a waterproof one, and both liners can be used separately or together. It has a TON of useful pockets. It has a lot of reflective piping, it's awesome. It's VERY sharp looking, and doesn't look like a Replica/Ricky Racer jacket, so I'd feel comfortable on a sportbike, cruiser, tourer or any kind of bike. I recommend this jacket to everyone.

I wear only Z leathers. Well, there is a FieldSheer jacket that I wear occasionally. But, alas, I did crash test in the red outfit. The knee had a couple stitches that came undone at the "Madonna's bra" knee cup and of course scrapes along the left leg and left elbow and forearm when I slid before I tumbled. The upper half of the red outfit was once upon a time made out of heavy reflective textile. The left shoulder got a spot that was burned through. So I had Z replaced the whole top half with black leathers.

The blue/white outfit gets the most use out of it and it looks like hell but still good to go. I even wore that outfit offroading a couple of times when I was in Arizona visiting one of my buddies. NOT ADVISABLE. I nearly died of heat injury both times. The yellow is for the track and doesn't get used that often. I need to start wearing it for the twisties so that it can get broken in more, it's just that the outfit is very tightly fitted and very uncomfortable to wear when not hauling ass and hugging the tank. The black one is more of a touring/commuting type that I just got. Why? Just for the hell of it, really.

Z Leathers, like most custom shops, don't have to change their outfit appearances from year to year in order to stay "hip". You get a good chunk of leathers and CE armor at all the right places.

PS Z Leathers also repair outfits from other manufacturers too, but they say that it's increasingly difficult to do with the new outfits because of the way they're stitched up and all the plastic pieces/metal pieces for decorations and such. They can't replace the plastic/metal parts and the stitchings were made more for economy of production than for repair, so when you bust a seam, it's done for.

Great info man... so do you have any basis for comparing Z to other custom makers, like Syed and Vanson (the other main 2 I am considering)...?

Also, your PS point... I hope that's not the case with my teknic chicanes. One seam by the hip started to come apart a bit and I wanted to get it re-strengthened. I was thinking about just getting a large gauge needle and thread and trying it myself...

Teknic Chicanes pants have now been added to the closet. :dthumb:

I don't see any Syed leathers this far outwest but the custom Vanson suits I've seen are really nice stuff.

As far as getting a big needles and threads and stitch up your own, you can do that, but can you really get to the seam? If you can then knock yourself out. Most of the times, they have to open up the suit, take the lining out and then stitch the seams up from the inside, and that's where Z Custom is telling me that they are having problems with a lot of the newer suits.

Jacket - Leather: Fieldsheer
Pants - Leather: Fieldsheer

Helmet: Shoei, very much wish I could find a reasonable price Shark
Gloves: Leather: AGV, Fieldsheer, A*
Boots: (formerly) Sidi, Oxtar's
One-piece suit - Leather: Oh how I wish I had one of these!
Two-piece suit - Leather: The aforementioned are full circumference compatible

I would never, ever, ever buy Fieldsheer again. Their customer service is the worst I have ever experienced across all industries. They had my pants for warranty repair work for nearly a year and weren't responding to any requests. Only because I knew a guy who used to work for them did I get a lead to someone useful. Now I spend my time disparaging them at every opportunity, like this one ;)

My A* gloves rock and I'll go this route again unless I find some Held's that are reasonably priced.

Haven't worn the Oxtars on the bike yet but I'm excited. The Sidi's fit my very wide foot well but just wore through.

Fair enough on the comparison.

And hmmm good point, I'm not sure. The chicanes are lined with mesh if I remember correctly so I might be able to get at the seam anyways.

Jacket - Textile: Teknic Sequoia- just got this recently and wore it for the first time yesterday. It fits great, and the quality seems excellent. Also have a Kawasaki Ninja jacket (maker unknown), and an older Hein Gericke textile (my first-ever jacket, has held up 10 years now).

Jacket - Mesh: One of the first Joe Rocket Phoenix jackets. I prefer more protection, though, and wear this only if it's 90+ degrees

Pants - Textile: Joe Rocket- have held up well for about 8 years now

Pants - Mesh: Joe Rocket Phoenix- like these and wear them quite a bit in hot weather

Pants - Denim/Kevlar: Draggin' jeans. Like them, however, I prefer more protection and usually just wear these on short rides around town or the short commute to work

Helmet: HJC CS-12 and KBC TK-8- lower-end helmets but fit well and are good quality. Would love to move up to an Arai some day

Gloves - Leather: Held "Steve"- sport-touring glove, comfortable and excellent quality; will probably never buy any other brand

Gloves - Mesh: Teknic- usually only wear in very hot weather

Gloves - Weather/Winter: Joe Rocket that I picked up on closeout for $12! I've worn them all winter and am thrilled with how warm they keep my hands!!

Boots: Dainese I picked up on e-bay- very durable, have about 8 years now. Joe Rocket race boots I picked up for only $49. Excellent boot.

Two-piece suit - Leather: Tiger Angel custom Australian suit I picked up on e-bay for a song ($350; new around $1400!) Luckily, it fits like it was made for me, and the leather and overall quality are amazing. Also have the Teknic Venom women's that I picked up for less than $140! (Can you tell I'll a successful bargain hunter?) Quality and fit is satisfactory.

One-piece suit - Touring/Textile: another e-bay special, a Fieldsheer that is great for 30 degree riding days

Armour (i.e. Icon, Bohn, Alpinestars): generic back protector

Rain gear: Frog Toggs- they really do work well!

smileyman 03-31-2008 01:40 PM

Just added the Icon Field Armor Legs to my collection. Scored them for $40 from another forum.

Wearing them right now, and they're comfortable. Good shin coverage- down to the top of my 8" or 10" leather work boots- and I have long legs. Might not be good for shorter people. The knee protector doesn't cover much above the knee, but the top/front of your thigh isn't very likely to hit the ground. Feel pretty solid, good padding, slim enough to fit under jeans, but I had to put the armor on first. I couldn't just pull my pants legs up and then slide them down over the armor. Overall, they feel more secure than the knee armor that fits into my Mod Jeans. Won't move around and turn useless. They feel good on the bike, and aren't bad for walking around- just a little creaky.

just added a Scorpion EXO 400 as a new lid.

I just got a new leather jacket from Sport Bike Track Gear. 2007 model Teknic Violator. MSRP $400, I picked it up for $200. :rockwoot: It has CE armor throughout including the back protector and has a 360 zipper so it will make a track legal 2 piece suit with my Teknic Sport pants.

2007 moodel and it was the last one they had. I dont like the looks of the 2008... Kind of ghey in my opinion. You might be able to find closeout 2007 models on ebay. I got lucky and came across the only one left in my size.

I added a pair of Joe Rocket Ballistic textile pants to my arsenal. I like them...very warm. Nice for this time of year.

I had a friend go down in a Joe Rocket Ballistic, honestly, it didn't hold up worth shit. I have a GX-Air jacket by Cortech, it has leather in the shoulders, elbows, and down the back, great protection and ventilation. It also came with a zip out quilted liner and rainproof liner, it's really a 12-month jacket.

I have the GX Sport. It doesn't have the leather bits, but it's comfortable, fits nicely, has CE rated armor and like you said, an all season jacket(we'll except for the Michigan winters).

He looped a wheelie (No it wasn't ebbs) and slid for a little while. It shredded pretty bad, he got a little rash, significantly less than he would have if he had been wearing a shirt. I had a mesh jacket and went down, I got rashed up on my arm and shoulder and the jacket shredded pretty quickly. I wont wear straight-up mesh anymore, it has to have something thicker.

Hmmm. I have two JR jackets. A Phoenix meshie I wear in the summer. And an Atomic textile I wear in the colder weather. Those and the ballistic pants are my commuting suit.

It's better that shorts and flip-flops, and probably better than jeans, the armor will give you more impact proection than denim. But it's not going to be as much protection as leather.

Sweat dries faster than skin heals.
