Deals gap is open, 7/9/10

Please pass this on to all forums you are apart of that may not know yet.

It could be closed til July/August. The crew contracted to clean it up is busy cleaning up I-40 between Asheville and Knoxville. They are also not allowed to use explosives on this one due to the flood control dams in that area.

DGMR may be closed the entire time as well.

Sucks:td:

fasternyou929 03-19-2010 12:24 PM

Is this related to the rock slide that some ass hat ran into with his Lincoln? I didn't think that was on the 11 mile stretch - was there another slide?

ontwo 03-19-2010 12:26 PM

Passed along. Sucks

this is on that rock slide. It makes it impassable for Tennessee Emergency Services to provide services to the 11 miles of the dragon. Tennessee does not want to pay North Carolina to service the road, so they have a 24/7 guard at the state line and at the rock slide.

Ouch, I know a few people planning an April trip from the Raleigh area, thanks for the heads up!

Yeah, SVrider rally is SOL

meanstrk 03-19-2010 12:47 PM

Yep. I posted about it on a couple sites as well.

The cool part is that there are SOOOOOOO many other excellent roads in the area, so it does not really matter too much! This might keep the non riding squids away for a while!

They are letting TVA and Alcoa people through that have to man the dams. I have a TVA badge, CLOSED COURSE TIME. Lane crossing for the win.

Ok Gang

I know the rumor mill is going 100mph and we are trying to track down all of it.

So here goes what we know as fact: There is a landslide on US129 right near the foothills parkway, mile marker 13/14. They have yet to issue the official time line to get it fixed as the state is still working the stabilization plan. NC has offered to provide mutual aid to keep the Dragon open but TN has not accepted it. As of today the Dragon is closed at the state line by the state of TN.

Ok we are working everyone we know and a few we don't to try and get TN to help out the road and the local economy by accepting a mutual aid agreement.

Please contact the TN Governor office and let him know is a respectful manner that we need him to change his mind on this issue. Here is his Info:

As for the resort: We are open for the time being, we will contiue to monator this siuation and judge what services we can contiue to offer. Remember we have a lot of great riding in Western NC still so as long as we can stay open we will. If the road block is moved we will contiue to operate, but if we fail to get TN on our side I am not sure.

View at the state line from 11am today. You can't see it, but they are erecting a barricade completely across the road and well into the sides of the road.

You can see the guard's trailer in the background.

Should force people to explore other roads around the area, which could turn out to be a good thing for the area.

Gas Man 03-20-2010 09:41 PM

Yeah but like said. What is the guys like killboy and dragons tail, etc going to do with this out??

I posted this info with some links to tdot and the news channel. Passing the info along to everybody. Sucks all around.

TDOT is getting hammered with calls and emails about it, they are trying to get it opened quicker, but it won't be cleaned up by sunday. They are still getting bids on it and they can't blast because Alcoa won't let them with the flood control dams.

If they are getting it from tailofthdragon.com, don't ever listen to that douchebag.

No we have plenty of those, our road crews do things right, and when you do things right it takes a really long fucking time instead of when you take shortcuts and fuck things up.

Look at how nice the pavement is on the gap. Most of our state roads are in that good of a condition.

Ya that's where they're getting it from. Doesn't matter to me. Plenty of other great roads down there and I plan on doing a lot more exploring this year.

I got a really dumb question.

What really is the difference between blasting and a natural rock slide? Rocks can still get in the water.

Shock waves from blasting travel through bedrock.

129 on the NC side to the rockslide on the TN side will reopen on monday. The TN section to get there will remain closed, so you can only get to it from NC.

They are setting up a gate. The road will be open from 8am to 8pm for sight seers/motorcycles/cars. RVs and commercial traffic will still be banned.

This is a bad idea in my opinion. This is almost like a closed course. With the gated method, they can also set up a hidden outpost and rader you and radio to the gate to give you a ticket.

It's more like 9 miles that people run normally. Overlook to store. People don't usually run the full 11 miles.

It use to be longer. It went from tabcat bridge to fugitive dam (the dam harrison ford jumped off in the fugitive)

There are tons of roads in the area that are fun.

Isn't The Awesome the one with the pic where he is dragging his elbows at Deal's Gap?

I did see a video on youtube of someone doing a super fast Deal's Gap run (I thinka round 9minutes). I tried to find it but I can only find people cruising, that fast Goldwing, and a couple short vids.

Now if you want to see fast, just go up during Florida Sportbike week.

Gotta say I love the Rage Fuck The Police after passing the cop.

I'd like to see an insane fast run through the gap with a dash cam.

Was that winter time?

DLIT's video was cool but those roads look like a racetrack. For those that haven't been to the Gap, there is absolutely no comparison.

The roads in the Smokies are narrower, have no run off, are lined with trees and have spotty visibility because of the trees/shadows/3 foot tall grass/etc.

Looks like it. The visibility is awesome up there in the winter. You can pass where you wouldn't dream of doing it in the summer.

I have to agree. Trip is not the only one that has commented about Jeeps.
