Deals gap is open, 7/9/10
Please pass this on to all forums you are apart of that may not know yet.
It could be closed til July/August. The crew contracted to clean it up is busy cleaning up I-40 between Asheville and Knoxville. They are also not allowed to use explosives on this one due to the flood control dams in that area. DGMR may be closed the entire time as well. |
Sucks:td:
|
Is this related to the rock slide that some ass hat ran into with his Lincoln? I didn't think that was on the 11 mile stretch - was there another slide?
|
Passed along. Sucks

Yeah, SVrider rally is SOL
|
Yep. I posted about it on a couple sites as well.
The cool part is that there are SOOOOOOO many other excellent roads in the area, so it does not really matter too much! This might keep the non riding squids away for a while! |

Well my group is still going down. :idk:
The Gap was my least favourite of all the roads (not for the road but for the hoopla around it). |

View at the state line from 11am today. You can't see it, but they are erecting a barricade completely across the road and well into the sides of the road.
You can see the guard's trailer in the background. http://webpages.charter.net/bogfro/3...e/P1010158.JPG |
Why does it take so long to clean it up?
|
Have to bid out the work to pull the rest of the exposed rock face is my guess

I love the "Tennessee welcomes you" sign that is just past the road block!
And who'e vstrom is that? figured it'd be your beemer. |
Wow that sucks.
|
Its more like the loss of your hangout place then the road its self, I was not there often but it felt more like a local hang out then even the mid tn roads and rides

another local, I didn't go up there yesterday. |
Should force people to explore other roads around the area, which could turn out to be a good thing for the area.
|
Yeah but like said. What is the guys like killboy and dragons tail, etc going to do with this out??
I posted this info with some links to tdot and the news channel. Passing the info along to everybody. Sucks all around. |
I passed the info along to a local forum (the group I'm going down with) and none of them believe me and said they read on a website it'll be cleaned up by Sunday. :lmao: :screwy:

Look at how nice the pavement is on the gap. Most of our state roads are in that good of a condition. |

Hey Trip...know of a good "waterfall" route? I want to see some waterfalls! |
Quote:

Awesome thanks! Last year I got railroaded into just following the group because I really didn't know where to go or what to do.
This year I plan on doing BlueRidge for a day and a day of waterfall sight seeing. |
I got a really dumb question.
What really is the difference between blasting and a natural rock slide? Rocks can still get in the water. |

In PA the Guv gives no-bid contracts to his buddies who fuck the work up.

129 on the NC side to the rockslide on the TN side will reopen on monday. The TN section to get there will remain closed, so you can only get to it from NC.
They are setting up a gate. The road will be open from 8am to 8pm for sight seers/motorcycles/cars. RVs and commercial traffic will still be banned. This is a bad idea in my opinion. This is almost like a closed course. With the gated method, they can also set up a hidden outpost and rader you and radio to the gate to give you a ticket. |

I remember watching semi after semi head up 129 past the DGMR heading from NC to TN. I have no idea how they are able to make it through there.
|
closed course deals gap weekend coming up in my future
|
They have two cops that are constantly moving that won't hestitate to write tickets. It's not exactly closed course. Just got to make sure they both are on the other side of you when you decide to let loose.
|
It's opening tomorrow from the Tennessee side!!!!!!! I am totally going after work.
|
Yea i just saw that on th Deals Gap FB Update. im glad makes my trip up there in a few weeks a bit shorter.

How long exactly is Deals Gap? I know the 11 miles shit, but is there a bunch more roads? What city does it start and where does it end?
And who is the fastest on this site? lol |
Quote:
|
It's more like 9 miles that people run normally. Overlook to store. People don't usually run the full 11 miles.
It use to be longer. It went from tabcat bridge to fugitive dam (the dam harrison ford jumped off in the fugitive) There are tons of roads in the area that are fun. drewpy |

So you guys just make laps outta the 9 miles? Hard to believe Drewpy is slow. |

I did see a video on youtube of someone doing a super fast Deal's Gap run (I thinka round 9minutes). I tried to find it but I can only find people cruising, that fast Goldwing, and a couple short vids. Now if you want to see fast, just go up during Florida Sportbike week. |

I wonder about Chris and Dlit though... from what I've seen they're pretty damn fast... none of us have ridden with them though...

DLIT's video was cool but those roads look like a racetrack. For those that haven't been to the Gap, there is absolutely no comparison. The roads in the Smokies are narrower, have no run off, are lined with trees and have spotty visibility because of the trees/shadows/3 foot tall grass/etc. |

I have to agree. Trip is not the only one that has commented about Jeeps.
