Actually, if I weren't under budget constraints right now, I'd pick up a Henry lever action .22's. That frontier model (octagonal barrel) really appeals to me. |
I've got one of these in a 12 ga, http://www.chiappafirearms.com/product/831
And a Ruger lever action in a 44 mag. |
I'm looking for a bolt-action .243 for hunting season. Don't really care what brand.

i just picked this up this week. Mossberg 500, 12ga, 20" barrel. i swapped out the stock pistol grip for a foldable stock and threw on an extra shell carrier. it's my new home def weap. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...s/P9300443.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...s/P9300452.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...s/P9300451.jpg |

My daughter wanted an AR-15 of her own since she enjoyed shooting my AR often, so I bought her a lower reciever for her 16th birthday. She worked a summer job and earned enough money to pay for the rest of the rifle. So far she's ran about 200 rounds through it and has it dialed in pretty good.
I was a little nervous puting pink pant (in the engraving) on a new rifle but the results turned out pretty good. She's happy and now the guys at the range wont keep thinking she's shooting her dads rifle! http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...ilot/AR15b.jpg http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...pilot/AR15.jpg |

I finally got some 20-rounds MD Arms drums in for the Saiga 12. The old East German paratrooper vest has a pocket that can take one drum and the AK mag pockets that can take at least two 5-round or 8 rounds stick mags and another loose pocket that can probably take three or four stick mags. Just not the really long 10-round or 12-round mags.

Right now I have a list of guns I want:
Masterpiece Arms MPA30T (yes, a ghetto blaster) Saiga 12 with all the goodies A nice AK 47 or 74 Glock 19 A nice AR M4 SA SOCOM II SA 1911, Mil Spec Colt King Cobra or Anaconda SW Model 27 I think that is all for now. Someone should make a Zombie Appocolypse topic LOL |

The G19 because again it's a 9mm and ammo should be plentifull. |
Quote:
Good call on the 9mm. That's why I like it as a handgun round- ammo is plentiful and reasonably cheap, and you can get some decent defensive rounds for it. Still, I think there are a lot better handguns out there than the G19 (or Glock anything, for that matter). |
Quote:
Lately it's gotten difficult finding anything other than FMJ ammo around here (at least for any reasonable price) and I can't shoot FMJ's at my range of choice. :( That's not saying Russian 5.56 is any easier... but you know what I mean. |

The pricing of 762 and 556/223 suck. I dont ant to have to buy 1000 rounds to get afdeal.
|
I'd like to buy some cheap 7.62 for plinking with my .308, but I heard that the 7.62 military surplus rounds are not good for .308 Win rifles even though a .308 is = 7.62mm.
Anyone know if this is true. |

nor pressure specs (SAMMI specs for the .308 are 62K CUP, for the Nato 7.62 are 58K). The issues are twofold: the greater thickness of military brass vs commercial (military is thicker, allowing for much case flowing of shot cases), and the headspace allowance of the NATO chambers vs the .013"shorter headspace allowance for the .308. Shooting fresh (unreloaded) 7.62 ammo in a sporter .308 will cause no ill effects; trying to chamber reloaded military brass that has not been full-resized (not just neck sized) will cause headspace problems, blown cases and all manner of bad things. The guys that reload 7.62 brass without full-length resizing for .308 are the ones who have issues. Regular sizing dies for the .308 are neck-sizing only, you have to buy a special full-length carbide resizing die to get full length resizing on the 7.62. I recently watched a fellow trying to close the action of a very new, very nice and expensive customized FN TSR XP on some reloaded 7.62 ammo (baggie brand); he was using a wooden mallet to hammer the bolt closed. After firing the one round the action seized and even with the intrepid fellow slamming the bolt handle on the side of the table he was unable to get it open again. We breathed a collective sigh of relief when he packed up and left. |
Quote:
|
This is my personal experience, so take it for what it is.
I have yet to have successfully blasted 5.56/7.62NATO ammo (not reloads) through my .223/.308 rifles. Every time I tried, within a round or two possibly three at most, the brass would swell and stuck in the chamber. I literally had to kick the bolt handle back to extract. This happened with good quality surplus GI ammo or First World surplus ammo and not Russian/Chinese steel case ammo. .223 and .308 on the other hand; even reloads (quality reloads from people who knew what they're doing), went through my military semiautos just fine. |
Quote:
Due to manufacturing tolerances, every chamber is going to be slightly different; depending on how the chamber go/nogo tolerances between the .308 and the 7.62 overlap on your specific rifle. Your .308 rifle may not work with certain ammo. The 7.62 chamber tolerances were set generous for a reason; so that they could shoot a variety of ammo found at hand from different manufactures in different NATO countries. Sporter .308 dimensions are tighter, allowing for less tolerance to specific ammo, especially reloads. That's just the way it is. If your .308 rifle won't digest 7.62 ammo, hot or cold... don't use it. If you are shooting .308's in a 7.62, watch for base thinning. You may even want to mic a couple of fired cases to see how much case stretch you are getting. Much beyond .007-8 and you are getting into case failure range. |

My Springfield XDm 9mm. I've put around 1200-1300 rounds through it, and I love this gun. It's my first, and has really hooked me. I have 3 on my immediate want list.
Semi-auto in .45. Not sure what yet. Looked at Glock G30 and G36 today, as well as a S&W M&P, and XD45. Want a Mossberg 500. Want to build an AR15 soon as well. Anybody with any tips/suggestions, feel free to toss 'em in here. Maybe I'll have to start a new thread on that topic. |

I'd like to get another 9mm soon. Probly a XD(M)sc or c. Then a XD(M) .45.

Ok, forgive my ignorance, but I have a real hard-on for a style of gun lately. I am looking for an AR-15 style rifle. I can only see spending the cash for a gun that could be used for hunting as well as plinking, Whitetail Deer but some Elk or Larger would be a possibility, but not a good possibility. I have seen the .223, but I know of few guys around my hunting area that use .223. My friend uses a AR chambered in .223 and he loves it, but I have my reservations. Any help and opinions are opreciated. I am going this week to look at a Les Baer that has been used but it is out of my price range...looking at around $600 or so, so used would be fine.
|
Tommy, there are some AR rifles chambered in .308 but you'll have a hard time getting one for under $600 unless you find a deal on a used one. The 6.8mm is also out there, again same price wise but I doubt it would be a smart choice for Elk. Even a .308 is borderline small for Elk size game. If it's really a big game gun you want, just get a good bolt action rifle. Bushmaster has a new (last few years) .450 chambering for their AR rifles and close in it has good energy I think, but I doubt it has any long range qualities, have not researched that one myself.
In all reality any AR platform is only going to be good for small to medium game or people. If you want a serious big game hunting rifle, get a 30-06 or larger bolt gun. BTW, using an AR in .223 for hunting is only legal for up to white tail deer in most states. Coyote, varmints etc are all fine but nothing bigger. GA didn't allow .223 for deer until 10yrs or so ago when better bullets became available for reliable kill shots. |
I have a 30.06 for hunting, but if I did get an AR I would have to justify it by hunting with it, so the .308 is really what I think I would have to go with. I want to keep a level head and stick with a budget, but if the right deal come around, I can see spending around $1,500 or so. Elk is just a dream also...its here and I will be trying a few hunting trips with my new off time and relatives in other states. I am just really loving the thought of an AR, but I dont want just a .22, and I cant see jumping into a custom right off the bat. If anyone was looking, I am moving back to Michigan, so the rules are different for hunting than Virginia. I just dont hunt smaller to focus on an AR-15 22, even though I would have a blast with that gun.
RE: Michigan is .243 or bigger so .308 is it... |

I haven't shot it very much, maybe a few boxes (at most 5). I was sighting it in and wanted to use some pretty decent ammo, so I used Hornady.
I have a Bushmaster also, that gets most of the abuse now. The Bushmaster I just use Winchester or Remington ammo. I'm just using the iron sites on this one so for the most I'm just happy to hit the plates at a set distance. |
